Makeover Your Living Room

By Keegan McGavin

Are you ready to have a living room makeover? You may have had the same living room look way too long; you may be gearing towards change, an upgraded version of your old home; or you may have a new favorite color. These are good reasons to finally get a new paint, brush and over-alls and start your painting project for a brand new living room.

Before starting the painting project, there are two things you must not forget to do. First is to cover all holes and dents on the wall. You can do this with putty, let it dry and sand down after. Your walls are then ready for their make-up.

Next step is to "vacate" the room. Take away area rugs, expensive decorations and personal items like photos, paintings and other knick-knacks. Cover the furniture that are too heavy to move. If it's a wall-to-wall carpeting room, cover the entire floor as well.

Paint the Ceiling- One way to easily paint your living room with less hassles is to paint the ceiling the same color. This is called alfresco painting and works very well, especially since you do not have to cut in the corners or the lines in the ceiling. After you are finished and pleased with the results, you can allow the paint to dry.

After painting, allow ample time for the walls and ceilings to dry. Have proper ventilation so air can circulate and paint fumes won't get stuck in the room. With a new color, you can now consider adorning your walls with a decorative paint. Options are stenciling, stamping and sponge painting. You can express your creativity in doing this project. With an inspiration from a beautiful furniture or area rug, you can imitate the pattern on the wall. All you need are tracing paper and acetate, and then stencil the design on the wall.

The paint used for stenciling is latex. If you wish to make the living room more coordinated, you can also stencil your area rugs and slip coverings. The paint for this is fabric paint.

This entire project can be done in a weekend and will give your room a fresh and updated look. The cost for paint and stencils is minimal when you consider the impact that the new paint job will have on your living room. You will have an entire new living room that is decorative and up to date in a weekend if you follow this simple guide for painting and incorporating decorative painting on your walls as well as your area rugs. - 30435
