Maybe it's not the catchiest title, but you'll shortly see what I'm getting at.
To overhaul your home decor correctly, set yourself a goal to come up with a solid plan before lift a finger to pick up a paint brush. Don't believe me? Check out the myriad of reno shows on the Home Network and you'll see they all make detailed plans before the work begins.
Preparation is the key. Hey, isn't that in a song somewhere?
I digress but you get the picture. A good plan including your budget is the only way to go for success.
I'm a total pack rat so I take the next part very much to heart. When making your plans and budget, be sure to include time and some funds for de-cluttering your home.
I save everything! I have my reports cards from 30 years ago, much to the delight of my children who think I was quite dumb in elementary school.
Ditching the clutter can be either a happy and fulfilling or absolutely trying experience. It all depends on your thoughts at the time. Either way, it's a necessary step that has to be completed on your way to a successful reno project.
You have my sympathies if you're like me and have to lie down in a dark room for a day to get up the nerve. If that's the case, here are some tips to get you going.
Firstly, it might not be your favorite activity but make a list of stuff thats important to you. For sure decide to keep the really important stuff but don't be afraid to be ruthless. If you've got a dozen Buddha figurines on display maybe you can cut it down to three or four for the sake of your decor.
Once you've figured out what to toss you can move on to what you'd like to donate or sell. Consignment stores exist for people like you. People who have nice stuff that they never use. If you haven't used it in 6 months chances are you're not going to so sell it or donate it. Many charities will come right to your house and pick up good, used furniture, electronics, sports equipment etc.
Here's the obvious bonus about using a consignment store, you get cash for your good used stuff. Womens clothing (in particular, shoes) is the top selling item so if you have some decent, slightly used clothing in your cupboard, sell it and use the cash to help finance the home redecorating project.
If your surplus clothing and gear is not consignment store quality, the yard sale is an excellent and often lucrative option. I've personally raked in over a grand in a morning doing this.
A last but viable option is using Craigslist or eBay to off load your larger ticket items. I used both of these services to great effect. Again, the money earned can be added to your reno budget.
Its a win, win!
